“The all-electric G-Class boasts 579 bhp and 1,164 Nm, while retaining its off-road capability similar to its combustion counterpart.”
Mercedes G 580 EV: The luxury electric unveiled with four electric motors and tank turn capability
Main characteristics:
- The all-electric G-Class is Mercedes’ first EV without the EQ prefix.
- The quad-motor setup produces 579 bhp and 1,164 Nm of peak torque.
- Retains comparable off-road capabilities with its combustion counterpart.
Mercedes G 580 EV: The luxury electric unveiled the much-awaited all-electric G-Class, officially named the new G 580 with EQ technology. Departing from the EQ naming convention, this is the first model in Mercedes’ lineup to do so, signaling a shift in their electric vehicle strategy. While retaining the iconic boxy design of the standard G-Class, the G 580 EV features subtle visual updates to differentiate it as an electric model. However, the most significant changes are beneath the surface, where the conventional combustion engine has been replaced by a quad-motor all-wheel-drive electric drivetrain. This powerful setup propels the 3 tonne SUV from 0 to 100 kmph in less than 5 seconds. With future electric vehicles also expected to drop the EQ naming system, the launch of the all-electric G-Class is a bold step in Mercedes-Benz’s electrification journey.
The G580 comes with a standard closed-out four-louver grille, while an optional blanked-out grille with illuminated surround is also available.
Mercedes G 580 EV: The luxury electric unveiled the tailgate-mounted spare wheel, but Mercedes offers the option to swap it for a square storage box to store items like charging cables and tools. The version one model includes a storage box as standard, with the option to switch it for the spare wheel.
The First Edition model has a square storage box installed on the tailgate instead of the spare wheel, and this option is available on other variants.
Mercedes G 580 EV: The luxury electric unveiled that the cabin remains unchanged from the internal combustion G-Class, with twin 12.3-inch digital displays on the dashboard. The G 580 now has an updated voice assistant with EQ technology, some of whose functions can be accessed without saying ‘Hey Mercedes’. It also offers around 20 voice commands exclusive to the G-Class. Buyers can opt for various features like rear-seat entertainment package with 11.6-inch twin touchscreens and Burmester 3D sound system.
Mercedes G 580 EV: The luxury electric unveiled the cabin design is similar to the petrol and diesel G-Class.
The powertrain of the new Mercedes G 580 EV: The luxury electric unveiled the significant change from conventional petrol or diesel engines. Instead, it has a quad-motor all-wheel-drive electric setup, with each wheel individually powered by an electric motor. This configuration delivers an impressive total output of 579 bhp and an astonishing torque of 1,164 Nm.
Power is supplied by a substantial 116 kWh under-floor battery pack, giving Mercedes the confidence to claim a range of up to 473 km on a single charge. When it comes to performance, the G 580 doesn’t disappoint, with the Mercedes taking just 4.7 seconds to accelerate from 0-100 kmph. However, the top speed is limited to 180 kmph.
Despite its electric powertrain and substantial battery pack, the G 580 still maintains its robust structure, weighing in at 3,085 kg (curb weight). This ensures that the vehicle retains its renowned off-road capabilities while embracing the future of electric mobility.
Mercedes indicates that the G 580 with EQ technology enables DC fast charging up to 200 kW, which can charge the vehicle from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 32 minutes. Additionally, the vehicle supports AC charging up to 11 kW.
Explore the latest off-road technology in the new Mercedes G-Class EV.
Before the Mercedes G-Class became a symbol of wealth and fame, it was famous for its off-road capability. This electric version has been optimized for rough terrain, ensuring that its great reputation is maintained.
Mercedes G 580 EV: The luxury electric unveiled the distinctive feature for this electric vehicle is the G-turn function. If you encounter an impassable obstacle after driving on a path, the G-Class EV can turn around on the spot, similar to a tank, avoiding the need for risky reverse maneuvers.
Thanks to its individual wheel motors, the G-Class EV can turn the wheels on each side in opposite directions, allowing it to rotate on its axis. While primarily intended for off-road use in loose terrain, it can come in handy in tight spots. But believe me, influencers in Los Angeles will use it in dusty parking lots for TikTok likes.
Since there is no engine at the front, the electric version is capable of crossing deeper waters than its petrol-powered counterpart. Its maximum fording depth is 850 mm, which is 150 mm more than the petrol model.
The four motors are connected to the wheels through double-jointed shafts, giving the wheels greater freedom to move up and down. Each motor has its own gearbox, which ensures that the torque is distributed to each corner, helping you navigate challenging terrain with ease.
A 26 mm thick panel spanning the entire length of the car’s lower body protects it from sharp rocks. Crafted from materials mixed with carbon for weight reduction and corrosion prevention, it adds 57.6 kg to the total mass.
Mercedes G 580 EV: The luxury electric unveiled the ‘low range’ option, with all four motors equipped with reduction gears. You can activate this feature by selecting the ‘Rock’ off-road drive mode.
The locking differential button found between the air vents has now been replaced with controls for low range, G-turn and G-steering.
Mercedes G 580 EV: The luxury electric unveiled the low range unlocks G-turn capability, allowing the G 580 EV to execute a 360-degree tank turn. However, Mercedes limits this feature to only 2 complete rotations. Additionally, the available G-Steering feature in off-road settings uses torque vectoring to adjust power to each wheel, aiding maneuverability. It is worth noting that G-steering is active only at speeds up to 25 kmph.
A sturdy 26mm thick bash plate protects the battery from debris during off-road adventures.
Mercedes G 580 EV: The luxury electric unveiled and can tackle steep corners and side slopes with ease, boasting impressive approach, departure and side slope angles. It can also operate in 850 mm deep water. By comparison, the 2025 internal combustion G-Class has slightly less wading capability at 700 mm.
