Among them, Maruti led with 9 models, while Tata, Hyundai and Mahindra had 4 models each. Kia had 3 models, and Toyota had 1 model in the mix. Notably, Maruti Suzuki models alone contributed more than 45% to this top-selling lineup.
From the Top 25 best selling cars of April 2024 Tata Punch retained the title of India’s best-selling car with dispatches of over 19,000 units in April 2024. This is the second consecutive month that a non-Maruti vehicle has topped the sales position. The success of the Punch can be attributed to aggressive marketing during the current IPL season, coupled with a surge in EV sales resulting in increased volumes.

In April, new car wholesales in India witnessed a modest growth of 1.7% year-on-year, reaching a new all-time high volume of 337,070 units. This follows a steady growth trend, with a substantial increase of 9.3% year-on-year, leading to a record 1,472,100 sales.
Among the Top 25 best selling cars of April 2024, Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and Tata saw modest gains, broadly in line with the market trajectory. Maruti Suzuki saw a marginal growth of 0.5%, while Hyundai and Tata saw growth of 1% and 1.9% respectively. Notably, Mahindra recorded a significant growth of 18.2%, gaining 12.2% share and claiming the fourth position. Toyota also performed impressively and stood at sixth position with a notable growth of 32%. However, Volkswagen was the only additional brand to see positive growth (+0.6%), while other brands such as Citroën, Skoda, Jeep, Honda and Renault experienced declines ranging from -14.2% to -59.7%, which is a significant trend for these manufacturers. It is a sign of challenging times.
Tata Punch regains #1 position in record market

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R made significant progress in April and overtook Hyundai Creta to take the second position in the list of best-selling cars. On the other hand, there was a change in the position of Hyundai Creta and it slipped to fifth position in the sales ranking. Despite this, Hyundai managed to sell around 15,500 units of the Creta in April 2024. However, the Creta suffered a decline of over 1,000 units in monthly sales, indicating a temporary setback in its sales trajectory. Still, there is a silver lining as Creta saw a respectable 9 percent year-on-year sales growth, indicating continued interest and demand for this popular SUV model.
